Understand how Your credit score is a numerical representation of your creditworthiness, typically ranging from 300 to 850. It’s calculated based on factors like payment history, credit utilization, length of credit history, types of credit, and new credit inquiries. Knowing how these components impact your score is the first step to improving it. For example, payment history accounts for 35% of your score, so timely payments are crucial.

Pay Bills on Time, Every Time

The most significant factor affecting your credit score is your payment history. Late or missed payments can drastically lower your score and remain on your credit report for years. Set up automatic payments or reminders to ensure you never miss a due date. If you’ve missed payments in the past, focus on building a consistent on-time payment record to gradually improve your score.

Lower Your Credit Utilization Ratio

Your credit utilization ratio measures the percentage of your available credit that you’re using. Keeping this ratio below 30% is essential for a good credit score. For instance, if your credit limit is $10,000, aim to keep your balances below $3,000. If possible, pay down balances before the statement closing date to reflect lower utilization on your credit report.

Avoid Closing Old Credit Accounts

The length of your credit history contributes to 15% of your score. Closing old accounts, even if you no longer use them, can shorten your credit history and negatively impact your score. Instead, keep these accounts open and occasionally use them to maintain activity. If you’re worried about annual fees, consider switching to a no-fee option with the same issuer.

Limit Hard Inquiries on Your Credit Report

Each time you apply for a new loan or credit card, lenders perform a hard inquiry on your credit report, which can lower your score slightly. Avoid applying for multiple lines of credit within a short period. If you’re shopping for a mortgage or car loan, multiple inquiries within a short window (typically 14-45 days) are usually treated as a single inquiry by scoring models.

Use Tools Like Experian Boost

Tools like Experian Boost allow you to add positive payment history from utility bills, phone bills, and streaming services to your credit report. This can be a quick and effective way to increase your score, especially if you have limited credit history. Additionally, review your credit report regularly for errors or inaccuracies and dispute them promptly to ensure your score reflects accurate information.

Build a Healthy Mix of Credit

Having a diverse credit profile, such as a mix of revolving credit (credit cards) and installment credit (loans), shows lenders you can manage different types of debt responsibly. If you lack variety, consider a small personal loan or secured credit card to build a more balanced credit history. However, only take on new credit if it aligns with your financial needs.

Stay Patient and Consistent

Improving your credit score doesn’t happen overnight. Consistent efforts, such as paying bills on time, reducing debt, and maintaining low utilization, will yield results over time. Check your credit score regularly to track your progress and stay motivated. A higher credit score opens doors to better loan offers, lower interest rates, and increased financial flexibility.
